Belated update, sorry!
Ok, first of all, I’m sorry! I know it’s been forever since I’ve updated this blog, but really, first I was depressed, but then I was just lazy. But as I sit at my desk at work at 2:30 in an empty lab cause everyone’s already left for the weekend, and with nothing to do I figure I really should post something. I am still lazy and not much has happened, so it’ll be a short review of the highlights of the past few weeks.
So my depression started when my computer died in June. And the depression got worst when I found out that I had fried my hard drive somehow and have lost all my pictures! Let this be a lesson to everyone, BACK EVERYTHING UP! Thankfully my nicer pics are in my blog so I still have something. As if that wasn’t bad enough, and thus, futhering my need for Prozac I then had to figure out how to get a new computer! Mark was nice enough to spend a few hours on the phone with Dell in Germany and managed to get me a new hard drive and even installed Windows and Word. Problem is it’s in German. So I now I have German speaking computer until I get back to Canada in September and can get my hands on a Windows CD.
Now I don’t want you all to think that I haven’t been having fun amidst all this drama cause I have! My mom came to visit, and had an interesting time as I’m sure you all have gathered by her post. While she was here Barbara took us to see the castles in Fussen. WOW! This castle is apparently the one that Disney used as a model for Cinderella’s castle. It was so beautiful! (I’ll do a post of pictures when I get home).
After Fussen, was my rafting adventure with my lab. Every year BI pays for every lab group to have a group outing. This year my lab decided they wanted to go white water rafting. We went to a small town in Austria (about 2 hours away), but I don’t remember the name. It was great! So much fun! I want to go again! This is something I defiantly want to organize when I get back to Ottawa.
Before my mom left we took a weekend trip to Strasbourg, pretty much just so she could say she’s been to France. The town is really nice, kind of a mix between German and French culture. We basically walked around town and had a nice and relaxing time.
Last Friday I went to a housewarming party for the new biology students. That was lots of fun. Lots of funny pictures came from that party! The English are hilarious drunks! The highlight of the evening was when the police came (it wasn’t even 1am, and we weren’t that loud). Everyone who spoke German hid and left the only-english-speaking students to deal with the only-german-speaking police. Unfortunately I have no pictures of this, but there is a video somewhere!
Saturday was spent recovering from Friday night and then Sunday I went on a bike ride with Barbara and her boyfriend. The way there was really nice, through farm fields, lots of rolling hills, really beautiful country side. It was about a 15km trip to a small town for a medieval festival. The festival wasn’t that impressive, but it was still nice. After that we went for a swim in a “natural lake”. Barbara sounded very impressed about this place so I was excited, but when I got there I realized that a natural lake for Germans basically amounts to a pond for Canadians, or at least those of us from Northern Ontario. It was still really nice, and very refreshing (we’re having a heat wave). After our swim I was pretty exhausted from the whole day, but seeing as we biked there, we had to bike back. ugh. The nice rolling hill now became monsterous. I almost died! Oh and another thing. My ass was killing me! I had borrowed Mark's bike and he seat, well it might as well have been a bed of nails! I am finally walking normally again.
Tonight is pretty low key. Francesco is leaving so we’re just going out for drinks after work. My dad is getting into town too tonight, so that’ll be nice to see him.
Things at work have slowed down, almost to stop. I’m bored out of my mind. I spend the day reading the CBC news website. I finally got a new program today, for a whole 20mins that is. At which point Iris came in and told me that never mind, another lab had already tried to make the molecule and it didn’t work. Hopefully she’ll have something for me to do Monday.
So that pretty much brings you up to speed on what’s been going on here. I’m getting really excited about my month of travelling. The schedule is all planed out, now I just have to figure out how to book reservations on the train! Michael will be here in 22 days! I can’t wait! And I’ll be home in less then 2 months! Excited for that too. I miss Canada.
