Liechtenstein

I had another long weekend last weekend. Almost didn't find out though! I was on my way out the door Friday afternoon and yelled back to my boss "See you Monday!" to which he replied, "You mean Tuesday." Huh? Southern Germany is very catholic, and this past Monday was pentacost, or something like that. Anyway, it ment that I got a long weekend! So I decided to go visit Liechtenstein. I'd never heard of this country and the only reason I decided on it was cause it was in my Let's Go! book. Took up a whole 2 pages! In case you're interested Leichtenstein is the only German speaking monarchy in Europe. It's total size is 160 km squared and has a total population of 33 000 (yes that's right, even Sudbury is bigger!). It's supose to be beautiful and right smack in the middle of the alps. So since it was supose to be a somewhat sunny weekend, I packed my bag and took off Saturday morning!

I stayed in Schaan and took a 45min walk over to the capital Vaduz (pop 5000). I walked around in the market a bit, but I don't know if it was because it was a long weekend, or if it was just because it was Saturday, cause everything was closed! So it was a nature day. I took a hike up (eveything in the alps is up!) to the Vaduz castle. It was a nice walk, and I took many pictures of the massive mountains everywhere. It was all very relaxing until I ran into a bunch of Italian guys (who were the same guys that had honked at me earlier they felt the need to point out). So here I am, a shy little Canadian girl, just minding my own business when I am pounced on my 6 big Italian men, one of which is fliming me! ACK! I escaped them and kept on my trek to the castle. I got to the top looked around a bit (you can't go in cause the Prince still lives there, how cool is that!) then sat down on a bench and enjoyed the sun! That adventure took pretty much all day, so I went back to my hostel thinking tomorrow I would find some hiking trails and try not to get lost (again, yes thats right, I got lost in a town that only has 5000 people!) Needless to say I was very disapointed when I woke up Sunday to find that the alps had disapeared in the coulds and that it was now pouring rain outside. As wonderfull as my mom's rain coat is, I didn't feel like hiking in the rain, so I headed back to Biberach early and sat around and watched movies all day. But still, it was a good weekend. Too bad I had to go back to work today :s

The Liechtenstein countryside, complete with the alps, the castle, the village and the vinyard!

Schloss Vaduz (or the Vaduz Castle).
